pali ke kua mahina ke alo

My letters! all dead paper, mute and white! And yet they seem alive and quivering Against my tremulous hands which loose the string And let them drop down on my knee to-night.

lent began today. which means no tv for me. im opening "Christ Plays in Ten Thousand Places" by Eugene Peterson (do people still name their children eugene?) this afternoon & im ridiculously excited. heard d.a. carson this weekend & fell in love. car stalled on chenal during rush hour. so it's got another appointment at the shop this afternoon. yeah! i didn't go get ashes this morning because of car troubles & lack of available early morning services near me. i am constantly reminded that i am an awkward person attempting to live amongst other odd people. girls' night devotional/discussion last night was good. conversations afterwards were better. roommate late-night analysis was best.

    Per our late-night analysis:

India's golden Olympic hockey streak extended unbeaten from 1928 to 1956; they won six gold medals in a row without a single defeat.

    And it's totally field hockey.

P.S. "Chicken McNuggets are made with crack" turned up one listing on Google.

You seem to be getting real interested in the whole Lent thing. Any fussin' with the BCLR folks over it?

Here in Baton Rouge, we got a king cake fresh and hot and oh so sugary right out of the oven of the local bakery.

i know at least one other bclr person who is abstaining (from something) during lent (and no, its not my roomie).

i havent heard anything negative (but i havent been wearing t-shirts either! :))

lent and advent are similar, both are suppose to be a dedicated time of preparation;one for Easter, one for Christmas. and i cant see anything negative in that.

(there is a longer answer that deals with the reformed church's awkward relationship with holidays (remember when the puritans baned Christmas?). but thats a whole 'nother post)

I actually went back on caffeine for Lent. I could religion-ize my decision, but the reality is that Lani started making coffee at home in the mornings, and some unknown blessed angel from glory above left a case of Dr. Pepper at our house last week.

Even though I'm a little late, I'm still mulling over some Lent abstinence/contribution ideas...And no, it won't involve caffeine.
